In ancient Greece, a game called Petteia was played using small pieces that represented soldiers and phalanxes. It’s thought that the game was utilized as a means to keep people occupied while also having significant spiritual meanings. This board game featured 30 squares and 10 playable pieces. Tabletop gaming has been around for a long time, with the first recorded occurrence being an Egyptian game called Senet.
